The big question in our house during supper is, "Was there any fun mail?" Fun mail is pretty much anything that isn't a bill or junk mail: magazines, birthday cards, invitations, packages and yes, BOOKS! Cheers to author Raven Howell for sending off her latest picture book, Blink and Glow, in a bright blue envelope that just screamed FUN MAIL. She also included a fun postcard thank you and something I haven't come across before - a QR code to link me to her website. Neat idea.
More About Blink and Glow
Lilly and Leo think it's super to catch fireflies and salamanders—and even more exciting, as they plan to bring their glowing nature finds to show-and-tell the next day. They have a change of heart when Grandma's wisdom guides the children to respect the freedom and light of the natural life in all living things.

Thoughts About Blink and Glow
I love picture books! Even though my baby is 21 I still can't resist them. Recently, I went to a baby shower where we were asked to bring a book for the baby's library. I brought 4! Thank goodness we're awaiting a new baby in our family so I can buy picture books without guilt.
The section about Leo and Lily catching fireflies and salamanders was exciting but I liked how it was balanced with a quieter, "let's think about things" portion that could lead to conversations about nature. Leo and Lily were guided by a grandma, not a mom or dad. A great choice since about 6.7 million people are living with their grandchildren. There was even a related art project at the end. This is a book that can occupy your child all day long: reading the book, talking about nature, making an art project and finally, searching out fireflies. And, before I forget: the illustrations are amazing. Despite the action taking place at night, illustrator Ann Pilicer uses brilliant colors and images that will grab the attention of young readers.
A Little Extra
Raven has 26 other children's books! I haven't read them but they look adorable. Check them out HERE.
Also, a fun fact about her publisher Tielmour Press: They donate a portion of the book's proceeds to organizations that support the environment, children's hospitals and children's reading programs. How nice is that?
