Review of Seaside Lullaby

More About Seaside Lullaby

Seaside Lullaby is a gentle board book for bedtime that helps baby learn to count from 1 to 10, featuring the flora and fauna of the seaside, from the creator of The Book of Selkie and Wildflower.

One wild island, underneath the moon

Two sleepy shipwrecks, stranded on a dune

Three shiny moon snails, drawing swirly paths

Four shaggy ponies, splashing in their bath!

From the celebrated creator of Mermaid Lullaby comes another gentle, soothing baby board book for bedtime reading. With short, rhyming refrains, Seaside Lullaby will also help baby learn to count, from one wild island / underneath the moon all the way up to ten fuzzy seal pups / wishing you goodnight. Vibrant illustrations of the coastal landscape are rendered in watercolour with plenty of detail for baby to enjoy again and again.

More About Brianna Corr Scott

Briana loves to make botanical illustrations, surface patterns, and paper dolls. She begins every project by painting from life. While she walks by the sea and hikes in the woods near her home in Nova Scotia, lines of poems and stories come to her. She often writes and draws simultaneously in one sketchbook. All of her projects are inspired by a place in this way; she combines the magic that is found in the quiet details of a landscape with her love of folktales to imagine her many creations.

Her favourite thing to make is picture books, and she dreams of writing a novel.

Thoughts on Seaside Lullaby

For my family, the coast is our happy place so this board book, that uses the animals and sights of the coast to build a counting book is perfect for us. Author/illustrator Brianna Corr Scott chose some animals and sights that I don't get to see at my mid-Atlantic beach which made this a fun book. Also, the illustrations are so lush and gorgeous I would happily hang one of these on my wall.

On the surface this seems a simple book: count from 1 to 10 on the coast. But Brianna has taken the extra care to make each page a true work of art. They are full of details that, even as you read it for the hundredth time, you will find new things to talk about with your child: flowers, animals, nighttime, daytime, bedtime, families, friends. What also struck me was the action on the pages. Not just obvious things like horses cavorting in the surf but the wind, the tides. With her images you see the motion.

This is my first Brianna Corr Scott book but I'm eager to see her other books, particularly The Twelve Days of Christmas.

A Little Extra

Brianna draws lots of flowers and plants which are my favorite things. I can't draw but I do take so many photographs and rotate them on a gallery wall in the hallway. Brianna invites us to take a peek behind the scenes at her studio with this video:
