Review of The Language of Love and Other Stories

jodiwebb9

For Christmas, a friend of mine got a short story collection edited by one of his favorite authors, Amor Towles. Since he has a five month old baby, short stories seemed like the best choice for him. A full-fledged novel and the time it requires might be too much of a commitment right now. We all struggle to find spare moments to read that don't result in all-nighters that leave us as work zombies the next day. Why don't we read more short stories? Watching my friend's relief to get something to read that could be done in ten minute bites reminded me that I had a short story collection gathering dust on my shelf (OK, technically, it was an e-book. No dust!) that is touring with WOW-Women on Writing. You can learn more about the other stops on the tour HERE.

More About The Language of Love and Other Stories

The Language of Love and Other Stories is about all types of love relationships: the ones that exist between parent and child as well as between generations, the bonds that grow between new lovers as well as those that exist between long-settled couples. The 20-story collection explores all the stages of love: the tenuous yet exciting beginning, the calmer, more mundane phases, the uncertain periods, and finally the ending—sometimes anticipated, other times devastatingly unexpected. It’s about whom one loves, how one loves, and what one does when the love is reciprocated, rejected or over.

Thoughts about The Language of Love and Other Stories

I read a lot of thrillers and mysteries so usually I'm rushing to get from page to page, tracking down the suspects and the clues. Reading a short story collection is a whole other experience. With short stories you can savor the language, rereading sections you like, thinking things over. After all, it's only ten pages or so from start to finish. You have time to revel in the story and still find out what happens in a timely fashion. Hey, if you really like a story you can even say, "I'm going to read that one again right now!" I had forgotten about the joy of reading short stories.

The Language of Love and Other Stories is divided into several sections for the different types of love: friendship, family love, couple love and the end of love. I liked this format because I could choose what type of love I wanted to read about. The variety also guarantees that you'll find at least one story that you connect with - although I found several. the stories range from traditional short stories to slice of life pieces to ones in alternate formats like letters. There are 21 short stories and I found myself reading one or two a night. My progress might seem slow but it gave me the opportunity to think over the story and encouraged me to think about my own life and relationships.

I have two things to share:

  1. Read more short stories!

  2. Start with The Language of Love and Other Stories
